Family First calls for abolition of Human Rights Commissions after climate censorship push

MEDIA RELEASE

Family First National Director and NSW Upper House candidate, Lyle Shelton, today renewed Family First’s call to abolish the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and its state counterparts after revelations that the federal body wants to regulate debate on climate change.

“A so-called human rights watchdog that seeks to muzzle Australians’ ability to question government climate policy is no friend of democracy or human rights,” Mr Shelton said.

Yesterday The Australian revealed that the AHRC told a Senate committee “regulation is necessary” to curb what it labels climate ‘misinformation’ — a move critics say will crush free speech and shield Labor from scrutiny over its failing green energy transition.

“This is exactly why Family First has long argued the commissions should be shut down. They actively oppose Australians’ human right to freedom of speech and act as enforcers for left-wing ideology,” Mr Shelton said.

Mr Shelton said the commissions have form, having failed to defend Australians against rising anti-Semitism while now seeking to decide which opinions on climate are “false.”

Mr Shelton himself has been a victim of the Queensland Human Rights Commission which compelled him to attend mediation with two LGBTIQA+ drag queens after they complained about his public criticism of them reading to children.

“Healthy democracies depend on robust debate. Family First will continue to fight for the voiceless — including those silenced by bureaucrats who think they know best. The Human Rights Commissions are a threat to freedom and should be abolished.”
