Launching its signature policy for the ACT election, the lead Family First candidate for Ginninderra Elizabeth Kikkert has announced the party's conditions for supporting the next government.
"If we hold the balance of power, an unconditional term of support for any government is to reduce rates for Canberra families - instantly and substantially," said Ms Kikkert.
"Over the term, we will halve the rates Canberra families pay.
"We will demand a 10% reduction in the first year, and a 10% reduction every year of the term. Every year. Compounded over the outyears, this will halve the rates for Canberra families.
"Canberra finds itself in an election with the major parties prioritising billion dollar trams and stadiums rather than addressing the cost of living crisis for Canberrans.
"It's simply not good enough.
"If Canberrans truly want to see action on cost of living, if they truly want to finally see their family put first, now they know who to vote - Family First."
For background purposes:
This policy will cost the government - approximately $49 million in the first year, and around $52 million in the second.
But both parties are spending billions on projects that families are paying for: a tram to Woden costing over $4 billion and a stadium in Civic costing $3 billion.
Other examples are:
- $80 million dollars on a scrapped HR system
- over $8 million on a 'complexity thinker'
- over $1.5 million to rebrand Canberra Health Services; and
- $400 million on interest payments alone.
