As a registered political party, Family First is exempt from the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). As a party that truly values our members, supporters and donors we are, however, committed to following the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) and the relevant provisions of other applicable legislation.
We have described below how and why we collect, use and securely store your personal information.
What Is Personal Information?
We have adopted the definition of personal information from the Privacy Act:
“...information or an opinion, whether true or not, and whether recorded in a material form or not, about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.”
The Privacy Act also defines what it calls ‘sensitive information’. Sensitive information is a subset of personal information where information or an opinion is about an individual’s, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, membership of a political association, religious beliefs or affiliations, philosophical beliefs, membership of a professional or trade association, membership of a trade union, sexual orientation or practices, and or criminal record. Additional protections are expected for this type of information.
What personal information is collected and how?
We collect personal information that is required by us as a political party. This includes:
- Your contact details, such as your name, address, email address, and telephone number, when you provide it to us in donating or signing up to receive emails
- Information on your political views, interests or preferences when you create a profile, support a petition or sign up for updates.
- Details about your broader opinions and views and relevant demographic information, such as your age and employment status, when you complete surveys or candidate application forms.
- Non-identifying information collected through cookies and other digital tracking technologies, including on this website and our social media accounts.
We do not store credit card information.
Personal information is generally only collected when you knowingly provide it. Information may be collected on third party platforms, such as X, Instagram and Facebook, but only if you agree on these platforms to share this information.
Why do we collect and how do we use this information?
We collect information to:
- Communicate with you about party activities, updates and other material
- Inform you of important news and other issues affecting our nation
- Allow us to respond to your enquiries or feedback
- Supply you with goods or services
- Seek your assistance through volunteering or donating to support our campaigns
- Comply with our legal obligations, including electoral laws of the Commonwealth and applicable State or Territory
- Improve our website and services
Broadly speaking, we will use your personal information for the purpose it was collected, as disclosed to you at the time of collection, to support our operations as a political party.
How do we protect and store your personal information?
Family First will never sell, rent, or licence, your personal information to other political parties, information brokers or similar organisations.
We ensure strict controls are on place for access and use of this information by our staff, candidates and volunteers supporting our campaign activities and other essential service provider organisations.
We hold your personal information in our electronic records or in those of our trusted technology partners, who use secure cloud computing or other services. We may also use third party or proprietary applications from time to time, which may be hosted on servers overseas. Family First uses encryption technologies and multi-factor authentication and ensure regular backups to protect your data from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.
Like many other organisations, we may use third-party applications, such as analytics tools from Meta, X, and Google, to manage interactions and analyse website usage. If you provide personal information to these platforms or are logged in to them when visiting our website, these third parties may identify you. We recommend reviewing their privacy policies to understand how they manage personal information.
Strict internal procedures ensure that data collection and use is occurring within the stated aims and objectives of this policy and other internal policies. Your personal information is held only for as long as the personal information remains relevant.
Changes to this policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated periodically to keep up with regulatory, technical and organisational change. The latest version will always be available on our website and changes to this Policy are effective when they are posted on this page. We encourage you to review this policy regularly.
