Below are the core values which inform Family First’s vision, mission and policies.
Faith
Family first is a political party for Australians of all faiths and none but recognises that the Judeo-Christian ethic best provides freedom and tolerance for all. This ethic underpins the party’s policy-making for the common good.
Family
While respecting the free choices people make and having compassion for those unable to form their own family, Family First promotes and seeks to have preferred in public policy the married nuclear family of mother, father and children. Family First believes all people should benefit from inclusion in extended families of multi-generational kinship relationships which include those who, for whatever reason, do not have kinship ties. In short, there is a place in family for everyone. The nuclear and extended family form the basis of local communities, strengthening towns, cities and regions.
Life
Family First believes human life begins at conception and should be protected from that moment until natural death. Public policy in support of the unique sanctity of human life must be achieved with the consent of the people and the “life debate” must be allowed to occur freely without acrimony and the threat of cancel culture.
Freedom
Family First believes freedom of speech, expression and religions are fundamental freedoms. True freedom is the freedom to do what one ought for the benefit of others. Family First believes true freedom arises not from license but from practicing virtues such as love of neighbour, forgiveness, hard work, duty and self-control which in turn give people the capacity to govern themselves and their communities in ways that require only a light touch from government. Family First believes in the democratic principle that people should only be governed with their consent and that those elected are to serve the interests of the electors. Family First believes in the sovereignty of the nation state and while cooperation with other nations at bi-lateral and multi-lateral levels is desirable, this must not be at the expense of the nation’s self-government.
Enterprise
For families to flourish they must be able to secure the Australian dream of home ownership. The economy must be restructured so a young family can raise children, own a home and achieve a comfortable living on one wage, if they so choose. Wages must be fair and based on the principle established by the landmark Harvester Judgement of Justice Higgins in 1907 who ruled that the minimum wage must be set at a level to support a family of five on one income. Businesses, small and large, must be allowed to flourish and trade freely so the economy grows, jobs are created and prosperity occurs. Government must play a constructive role in releasing and stewarding the natural resources of the nation for the common good in a manner that is environmentally sustainable. Government has a role to play in curbing the excesses of large corporations.
Subsidiarity
Family First believes in the principle of subsidiarity – empowering individuals, families and communities to resolve the matters closest to them. As many roles have been progressively taken on by the state, expectations on governments to fix all problems have exponentially increased, in a way that is disempowering and ultimately unsustainable.
