LNP fumbles “what is a woman” by leaving self-ID laws intact

To any reasonable Australian, the answer to the question "What is a woman?" is simple.

For the Queensland Crisafulli Liberal-National Government and the federal Albanese Labor Government, however, it appears to be far less straightforward.

While both Premier Crisafulli and Prime Minister Albanese have publicly answered this question, Crisafulli calling a woman "an adult female" and Albanese describing one as a "female woman", their governments seem unable to take such a clear position in practice.

At present, all states and territories permit gender self-identification. In 2023, the then Queensland Labor government removed the requirement for individuals to undergo gender reassignment surgery before changing the gender marker on their birth certificate. Although Queensland's Minister for Women, Fiona Simpson, stated in answer to a question on notice to Parliament last week that a woman is "an adult female human being", the state Government has taken no legislative steps to fix Labor’s dangerous folly and enshrine this definition in law.

Both Crisafulli and Albanese, and their respective Liberal-National and Labor Governments, are adept at paying lip service to common sense. Yet when it comes to turning that common sense into action to protect girls and women, they are far less direct.

Family First is prepared to turn reason and truth into real legislation. That is why the party will be fielding hundreds of candidates at the up-coming South Australian, Victorian and New South Wales elections.
