Why Kamala Harris is making abortion a key campaign plank

Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee following Joe Biden's perplexing exit from the campaign, has placed so-called "reproductive rights" at the forefront of her campaign.

This focus on the killing of unborn babies is a strategic move she believes will be a winning issue against Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

It was one of the only policy initiative she mentioned in her statement on becoming the presumptive nominee for the Democrats this week.

She said if elected President she wanted to “protect reproductive freedom”, despite the fact that vast numbers of women are coerced into killing their unborn babies.

But no one should be surprised abortion is her passion.

As California’s Attorney General, Harris aggressively pursued David Daleiden, a pro-life activist who exposed Planned Parenthood's involvement in the sale of unborn baby organs and tissue through undercover videos.

Daleiden’s work aimed to reveal unethical practices and protect unborn babies, but Harris’s office raided his home, seizing his footage, and later, her successor filed 15 felony charges against him.

These actions were seen as an attempt to silence pro-life voices and protect Planned Parenthood from scrutiny.

Daleiden’s legal battle continues, with ongoing litigation challenging the charges brought against him.

His efforts have inspired a movement dedicated to exposing the realities of abortion and advocating for the rights of the unborn, making his case emblematic of the broader fight to protect unborn babies.

Harris’s campaigns have been significantly bolstered by pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood.

These organisations provide essential financial support and voter mobilization, ensuring Harris's political survival and success.

In return, Harris champions their cause, advocating for policies that allow for unrestricted access to abortion.

In today’s political climate, the issue of abortion has become a defining one for many voters, especially within the Democratic Party.

By taking a strong stance on the killing of unborn babies, Harris secures support from so called progressive and women’s rights groups.

This not only fortifies her political base but also positions her as a leading figure against conservative efforts to restrict abortion.

Harris believes that emphasising her commitment to abortion will draw a stark contrast with Trump, who although ironically is not pro-life, he put pro-life judges on the Supreme Court which resulted in the historic overturning of Roe v Wade, sending the issue of abortion to State legislatures to decide.

For Harris and her supporters, the issue of abortion is framed as a matter of personal autonomy and women’s rights.

They argue that access to abortion is essential for gender equality and personal freedom.

However, pro-life advocates contend that this perspective neglects the rights of the unborn, whose lives are terminated through these procedures.

They view Harris’s policies as morally and ethically indefensible, prioritising the interests of adults over the lives of innocent babies.

Harris believes that focusing on abortion will help her defeat Donald Trump by rallying the Democratic base and appealing to key voting blocs.

The issue of abortion has become a litmus test for many voters, particularly women and young people who are deeply invested in this issue.

By positioning herself as a staunch defender of abortion, Harris hopes to draw a clear distinction between herself and Trump, who while not pro-life has consistently taken a pro-life stance.

Trump was right in the recent debate against Biden to highlight the fact that Democrats believe in abortion-to-birth and some even believe in abortion after birth, which is infanticide.

Despite this, Harris sees the overturning of Roe v. Wade and subsequent state-level restrictions as galvanising moments for her campaign.
