Family First backs Hood and Howe bill to give babies a chance

Family First proudly stands behind the initiative of South Australian Liberal MP Ben Hood to reform the state’s abortion laws, ensuring unborn babies are given a chance at life beyond 28 weeks. Hood's private member’s bill, which would mandate live birth rather than termination for pregnancies at this stage, underscores the importance of human rights for the unborn.

“This bill provides a responsible and considered compromise – protecting the child’s right to life while respecting the mother’s choice to end her pregnancy,” Hood said. His proposed legislation highlights the critical need to address what he calls the “unintended consequence” of current laws, where the overwhelming majority of late-term abortions are performed for reasons other than saving the life of the mother.

Law professor Dr. Joanna Howe, a leading voice in drafting the bill, echoes this sentiment, describing the practice of foeticide as "brutal, barbaric, and wholly unnecessary" for babies capable of surviving outside the womb. She stresses, "For SA babies in the third trimester who are at a gestation where they can feel pain and would have a 96 per cent chance of survival if born alive, the injection of potassium chloride is brutal."

The Family First Party sees Hood's bill as a crucial step in protecting unborn lives and restoring dignity to the abortion debate. With babies in the third trimester capable of feeling pain and having a high chance of survival, it is a moral imperative to support legislation that reflects both compassion for the child and respect for women. Ben Hood's bill embodies that balance, and Family First urges all to rally behind this essential cause for human rights.
