The Family First Party condemns the shocking lack of compassion displayed by Coalition Senate Leader Simon Birmingham, who yesterday declared he would never support giving medical care to babies born alive after abortion.
His opposition to the Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill is a betrayal of fundamental human dignity, particularly in light of the courageous testimony from whistleblower midwife Louise Adsett about babies born alive after failed abortions, “gasping for breath” and left to die.
He told the Senate "I would not and will not ever vote for this bill or any measures that restrict women’s reproductive rights."
Birmingham’s cold dismissal of a bill that simply seeks to provide basic medical care to these vulnerable infants is indefensible.
While he frames his opposition as a defence of "women’s rights," his refusal to protect newborn babies alive outside the womb reveals a disturbing lack of humanity.
The Family First Party praises Senators Matt Canavan, Alex Antic, Ralph Babbett, Malcolm Roberts and Gerrard Rennick for their unwavering commitment to championing this bill.
Their courage stands in stark contrast to Birmingham’s moral failure.
It is a disgrace that Peter Dutton, leader of the Opposition, has gagged MPs and Senators from discussing abortion, prioritising political convenience over the lives of innocent children.
Greens Senator Larisa Waters sought to wedge the Coalition yesterday by putting up a motion to have the born alive bill expunged from the Senate notice paper.
Even crossbench senators who oppose the bill recognised the importance of democratic debate and voted to keep the bill alive, even if they don’t support keeping babies alive.
