Family First welcomes the initiative of Dr Joanna Howe and NSW MLC John Ruddick to end the barbaric practice of sex-selective abortion in New South Wales.
The Evidence is Clear
A landmark study from Edith Cowan University has revealed that sex-selective abortion is occurring within certain communities in NSW. This means baby girls are being deliberately targeted for abortion simply because of their gender.
Dr Howe has been outspoken in exposing this practice, describing it as “a human rights abuse against the most vulnerable – unborn girls.” Her Save Our Girls Speaking Tour has brought the truth into the light and mobilised hundreds of people across Sydney to stand for justice.
A Landmark Bill
On Tuesday, 22 October, John Ruddick MLC will introduce a bill in the NSW Parliament to outlaw sex-selective abortion. The proposed law would impose heavy penalties, including fines and up to five years’ jail, on doctors who participate in this practice.
Ruddick has said the bill “sends a clear message that girls are valued equally to boys in our society and should be protected from being killed in the womb simply for their sex.”
Family First has long-called for such legislation and strongly supports Ruddick’s. It is appalling that abortion is legal up to birth in every Australian state and territory. Outlawing sex-selective abortion is an essential first step towards ending what is one of the greatest human rights injustices of our time.
Rally Details
Dr Howe and Ruddick are urging everyone who can to join the rally to support this bill. Family First adds our voice to that call and National Director and NSW Upper House candidate Lyle Shelton will be in attendance to show the party’s support.
